Growing up, I used to think it was really cool working with the FBI…I mean they had hot-shot uniformed guys trying to catch the ‘very’ bad guy. Imagine tall, slim and fine girl like me on their team, I leave the rest to your imagination.
So, I will just summarize why darling FBI and APPLE seem to be having a serious face-off.
Fast Forward>>>A terrorist attack on the US prompted the court’s ruling for APPLE to offer ‘technical assistance’(as in…HACK in simple terms) to the FBI in order to gain access to the suspect’s Iphone. A related case occurred even more recently, but this time the Iphone belonged to a drug dealer.
Offering technical assistance according to APPLE, would mean creating a backdoor to weaken the Iphone’s encryption(not just one Iphone)which will cause the company to divulge its consumer’s privacy.
Now, the tech-giant- APPLEclaims that the court is asking for a dangerous power that the congress and American people have withheld. According to the Epic times, I gathered that the case already reached congress and Tim cook isn’t having it easy, as he is willing to take itfurther to the supreme court.
APPLE’s colleagues in the digital space arenot leaving the company in the deep-end. GOOGLE, TWITTER and FACEBOOK have come out to support the tech-giant.
Without further ado, one might wonder why APPLE isn’t playing HERO by offering ‘technical assistance’ to the FBI. Here are some reasons to consider:
First, its vulnerability to hackers, once the Iphone encryption is weakened it makes the device easy for hackers to penetrate (hmmm…you have got to imagine the amount of valuable and private information stored on a mobile phone).
The twin evil is Identity theives, these guys got no chill. They are the ones who gather data about an individual fraudulently in order to take advantage of a relationship this individual has had with a service provider thereby empowering the thief to carry out transactions while the individual bears the brunt.
Consequently, this is VERY important for every organization- the social effect on consumers is that they begin to feel(perceive) their privacy is invadedthereby increasing their privacy concern and leading to LOSS OF TRUST in the brand for both potential and active customers(consumers). Now, this is RED LIGHT for any organization!
PERCEPTION is REALITY. Brands involved needs to know the following:
- Once a brand is perceived as being responsible with an effective framework for online privacy protection, the consumer’s online privacy concern is lowered.
- If the consumer’s privacy concern is high, there is the likelihood that the consumer will enter a wrong or incorrect information and sometimes, go as far as adopting privacy protection technologies.
Consider the consumer’s perspective, it’s scary the tons of information the internet has about us! There are different channels on the digital space where we voluntarily or forcefully leave this information.
I know we are in the digital age but forgive me, if I am stereotyped when it comes to leaving my information online. Sometimes, we just can’t leave our fate in the hands of these brands.
So I will just drop a few tips on how to protect your digital privacy from the likes of hackers and identity thieves.
- Review your brower’s cookies at regular intervals.
- Check and reset your privacy settings if necessary
- Decentralize your digital identity; different browsers, credit cards or different devices could be of help.
Going back to the APPLE vs FBI showdown…
Should APPLE play the role of HERO by divulging its consumer’s privacy for a terrorist?(how many other terrorists own an Iphone…just saying) Remember, what’s at stake for APPLE.
Darling FBI needs to save the day…who knows the number of lives that can be saved with APPLE’s help.
